I tried really hard this spring to make our little backyard garden presentable by my baby’s first birthday. Something about him running around in a yard completely overgrown (and not in the pretty way) felt somehow disenchanting to his childhood, and I really wanted to make it a nicer environment. I planted flowers in the beds, and finally threw a handful of wildflowers into the one remaining bed. They grew so tall, they took over everything. Eventually, they created an almost tent-like little grove that he would run over to and play inside, and I finally got the garden magic I’d dreamt of.
