lil red. 2023
In 2023 I moved back to Colorado after spending a year in New York City. At that point, it had been years since I’d actively held a drawing practice. I’d start off and on again, but mostly it remained off. I found myself sitting on my back porch drinking my coffee and feeling listless — like I should do something but didn’t know what. It was a tangible feeling that echoed in my bones.
One day, I heard a quiet voice say, “Draw.” Naturally, I ignored it. Too lazy, I thought.
The next day, it happened again. And the next, and the next.
Finally, I recall hearing a whole group of voices in my head chanting, “Draw, draw, draw, draw!”
They sounded like a collection of people, spirit guides, ancestors, anyone who cared about what went on in my little corner of life, all urgently pushing me into the light. Finally, I threw my hands up and gave in; I listened. I began to draw.
My art practice felt so stale to me, so I decided I would draw every day for a year and see what happened. The following sketchbook is what evolved from that decision, and I’m so happy I listened to those voices in my head.
